Runcorn SHS Students Winners – QTN Apprentice Competition
On Monday 7 September Kurt Rankmore, Brandon Harnell and Dusan Licina from Runcorn State High School celebrated their success in taking out first, second and third prize in Stage 1 of the inaugural Queensland Tooling Network (QTN) Apprentice Competition.
The students, who are studying Industrial Technology and Design at one of the 24 Gateway Schools to the Manufacturing and Engineering Industry high schools across Queensland, beat 51 other Year 11 students from Runcorn SHS, Bundaberg SHS, Pioneer SHS, Rochedale SHS, Noosa District SHS, Pimlico SHS, Ignatius Park College to take out the competition.

All prizes included a trophy, certificate and basic hand tools and additionally Kurt received a large Sumitomo toolbox, full set of tools and Starrett 200mm dial callipers; Brandon took home a small toolbox and Starrett 200mm vernier callipers and Dusan won a small toolbox and Starett 0-25mm micrometer. Special thanks must go to the sponsors for these fantastic prizes valued at over $700.
Designed to provide students with an opportunity to gain an understanding for and develop a working knowledge of careers within the tooling and engineering industry, the competition involved students manufacturing a drill gauge to be judge by employers within the industry.
Each student was required to complete the project in 8 hours with breaks taken for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea breaks. The QTN judges commented on the quality of workmanship of all the entries received.
