Funding Guidelines

A Workplace Excellence Program Manufacturing Starter Initiative funded program delivered in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, Regional Development Industries, the Department of Education, Training and the Arts and Manufacturing Skills Queensland.

Introduction

A key strategy in building awareness of manufacturing career pathways is for key teaching staff to be given the opportunity to establish working relationships with manufacturing organisations in their regions. In addition, it has been identified that linking the curriculum to the workplace allows students the opportunity to form the link between content delivered in the classroom and its application to the workplace. To allow students to make a successful transition to work, teachers require the tools to facilitate the contextualisation of content that aligns to the needs of industry. This project aims to provide funding to allow teachers to undertake the relationship and curriculum development work that broadens and enhances the school’s ability to deliver manufacturing and engineering related content and subject matter in an industry context.

What is the High Schools Manufacturing Links Program?

The High Schools Manufacturing Links Program aims to provide teachers with funding to facilitate their release from normal school duties to undertake project development work that will enhance and broaden the school’s ability to deliver manufacturing and engineering related content with the guidance of industry.

Who is eligible?

It is recognised that all teachers play a role in advising students in the subject selection process. Teachers across all disciplines are eligible to apply for funds including industrial technology and design, maths, English and science teachers.

What are the funds used for?

Funding is provided to support the teacher’s release from the normal school program to develop a piece/s of work in partnership with industry that relates to any of the manufacturing sub-sectors. Working with industry partners, teachers may choose a project that aligns to engineering/fabrication light and/or heavy, marine, aerospace, biotechnology, electronics and food processing. Teachers will be required to research, negotiate, develop and document the project to a point where it can be implemented in the school and be suitable for sharing with the broader school community.

What criteria should the application address?

The application should briefly outline clear project objectives detailing the activities to be undertaken and an outline of the finished product. The application should detail the benefits to the students and describe how this product will impact and improve the delivery of the curriculum or particular content.

Examples of projects may include but not be limited to:

  • Alignment of curriculum and VET delivery to industry standards
  • Skilling tasks that align to industry needs
  • Developing a project utilising CAD and aligning to an industry outcome
  • Contextualising and aligning maths delivery to industry standards

What funds are available?

The High Schools Manufacturing Links Program makes available up to $1,500 for the specific purpose of releasing the teacher from the normal school program. It is envisaged that the money, in most cases would facilitate the release of a teacher for five (5) working days. The funds will be paid to the school and may be utilised for the time spent in industry developing relationships, research and for the final development and documenting of the project. Any materials developed under the project should be suitable for implementation within the school program in addition to sharing with the broader school community. Where possible, schools are encouraged to contribute Teacher Relief Scheme (TRS) funds in conjunction with High Schools Manufacturing Links Program funding should schools choose to extend the teacher’s release to allow more extensive project work.

Outcomes

Teachers who receive funding will be required to meet four (4) mandatory outcomes including:

  1. Visit and establish working relationships with a minimum of three (3) manufacturers with whom they have had no or little engagement with and where the teacher can demonstrate alignment between manufacturing process and content delivered within the school environment.

  2. Contextualise a unit of work that could be utilised within the school demonstrating improvements and/or enhancement to current delivery processes in manufacturing/engineering related content. The material should be developed to a standard that will allow for the distribution and sharing with other schools. Projects that facilitate learning/activity across curriculum areas would be highly regarded.

  3. Implement the project within the school curriculum.

  4. Present or publish the project in a recognised forum or publication, for example, Industrial Technology and Design Teachers’ Association or Education Views publication.

How are applications for the Manufacturing Links Program assessed?

The manufacturing links program is designed to provide teachers with access to funds to undertake projects through a streamlined application process.

Step 1 Discuss your project ideas with your Head of Department and/or Principal

Step 2 Discuss your ideas with the Manager for the Manufacturing Gateway Schools Project:
Alana Thornber
Phone: (07) 3364 0600
Email: a.thornber@msq.org.au

Step 3 Complete and submit the online application form

or

Download the application form, complete it in your own time and then email it to a.thornber@msq.org.au

Applications will be assessed by officers of Manufacturing Skills Queensland. It is expected that applications will be assessed and processed in 10 working days.

How will you receive the funding?

If your application is successful, you will receive a letter of offer from Manufacturing Skills Queensland. To accept the offer, the Principal will need sign the form accompanying the letter of offer and return it to Manufacturing Skills Queensland. On completion of the project, you are required to send a complete copy of your work electronically, together with a school invoice detailing the costs involved in the project. Invoiced costs will be paid on completion of the project only. The invoiced costs are not to exceed the amount approved by Manufacturing Skills Queensland.
