Southside SFS
Machinery, Equipment and Associated Metal Products Skills Formation Strategy
Skills Formation Strategies (SFS) are designed to encourage business, organisations, regulatory bodies, government education providers and registered training providers to work together on identifying long term solutions to workforce development issues.
This SFS is specifically focused on the manufacturing sectors of machinery and equipment manufacturing and associated metal products and covers the geographical region south of the Brisbane River to the Logan River encompassing the Redland city, Logan City and the Brisbane City Council precincts.
Brisbane Southside region has experienced significant population growth and supports a vibrant and healthy regional manufacturing industry. The region has the potential to further develop as a global hub for machinery and equipment and metal product manufacturing.
Under the leadership of an Industry leaders Group (ILG) and with the support of the project manager the SFS project is intended to support the growth of the Manufacturing sector by assisting the industry to understand the relationship between industry development, workforce planning and development, and skilling requirements and manage the industry relationship with training providers.
The ILG has determined five key themes in the move to meet the objectives of the SFS:
1. To meet monthly to foster strategies for workforce development.
2. The development of a communication strategy was required.
3. Initiatives should centre on a whole of business approach.
4. To utilise existing and forthcoming programs in the development of the workforce.
5. The image and attraction to the sector is a major issue.
Strategies are now in place to analyse labour and skills issues, create action plans, establish open communication paths between workers and employers and promote the manufacturing sector in the Brisbane Southside region.
