About MSQ

In March 2006, the Queensland Government launched the "Queensland Skills Plan". The plan outlines a policy framework to better match the supply of skilled labour to industry's needs and the economy's demands.

As part of the initiative to give industry greater ownership of training, the Skills Plan announced the creation of a manufacturing and engineering centre of excellence for industry skills. Accordingly, Manufacturing Skills Queensland was established in July 2007 as a division of QMI Solutions to draw from its extensive experience in assisting manufacturers to become more competitive.

Creating the skilled workforce that Queensland employers and industry needs is a shared responsibility. Training alone cannot solve skills and labour shortages, and government alone cannot determine our workers' skills needs nor fund all the necessary training. Manufacturing Skills Queensland will play a key role in leading industry and Government engagement on VET, skills development and labour market issues.

MSQ will assist manufacturing industry to lead and drive the development of skilling strategies which:

  • Positions the manufacturing industry as a preferred career choice
  • Build the skills industry needs in the existing and new workforce
  • Identify and implement best practice entry pathways to industry careers and training
  • Engage young people into the manufacturing sector
  • Retains the knowledge and experience of the aging workforce through coaching and mentoring programs, succession planning and exit strategies
  • Implement proactive retention programs and flexible work environments within individual enterprises
  • Increase the number of new entrants in the manufacturing industry
  • Improves completion rates of apprentices and trainees
  • Showcase Queensland Manufacturing's unique growth pathway through technology and innovation
  • Develop industry and regional networks that create contact points for entry employment and training
  • Enhance enterprise and workforce skills in competitive and leading manufacturing practices

As manufacturing's leaders in workforce development, MSQ will develop a superior customer focus with a range of stakeholders which includes:

  • Industry/employers
  • Industry associations
  • Unions
  • Government
  • Training providers
  • Group training organisations
  • Schools
  • Apprentices and trainees
  • Students and parents
  • Existing workers and individuals
